Overview of the Program
Irrational growth of industries and uncontrolled population explosion have spoiled natural resources of
Pakistan contributing to environmental degradation in the country. Millions of hectors of agricultural land have been contaminated and rendered unfit for cultivation due to exhaust of toxic wastewater of the industries. Piles of untreated solid waste in the cities and industrialized zones have created very hostile environmental conditions for the population to live there. As Pakistan being a less developed country of the world is facing such problems due to lack of environmental professionals and availability of advanced technologies of pollution control. Severity of the issue can be judged from the Comprehensive Environmental Assessment Report of the World Bank that says "economy of Pakistan is suffering a loss of Rs. 356 billions in a year due to environmental degradation".
Achieving sustainable development by the coming years should be the top most agenda of Pakistan strategic planning to give birth to an environmentally sound and healthy nation. Green economy, biodiversity and ecosystem services, conservation of natural resources and environmental governance are required to be incorporated in managing sustainable development of Pakistan. This entails a pressing need to start educating our young in environmental discipline and courses. Environmental professionals are also on high demand in the world especially in Gulf States. Since countries have made mandatory employment of such professionals in order to meet international standards of environmental safeguards in their organizations and businesses.
At present, some public sector universities in Pakistan have taken initiative launching environmental discipline at undergraduate level. However, still there is a lot of room in educational institutes to teach environmental courses in the country. Having realization of such importance of environmental discipline being a prerequisite for shaping a sustainable world, the Institute is going to start BS 4 year Environmental Science Program (BSES) from this year. IET having highly qualified faculty of Chemical Engineering and Basic Sciences Department with a blend of industrial and teaching experience would proven to be a very much supporting faculty to conduct environmental courses. Environmental professionals trained by the IET will help addressing environmental concerns and issues of the country and the world as well.
Introduction
Environmental science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical and biological sciences to the study of environment. Environmental scientists bring a system approach to the analysis of environmental problems. They work on subject like understanding of earth processes, evaluating alternate energy systems, pollution control and mitigation, cleaner production, environmental management systems, natural resource management and global climatic change among others.
Aims & Objectives
The overreaching aim of BS Environmental Science is to develop human resource in meeting of environmental challenges and broader objective of achieving sustainable development.
Teaching Objectives
BS Environmental Science is designed to provide students with the knowledge base and equip them with necessary skills for pollution abatement, conservation and wise use of natural resources for the benefit of society by enabling them to:
- Learn how to analyze and assess environmental problems.
- Carry out independent scientific and technical research on environmental issues.
- Propose sustainable solutions for environmental problems.
Learning Objectives
- Develop capabilities to understand the natural and socio-economic processes driving environmental systems.
- Have scientific and technical expertise to solve environmental problems by introducing interventions.
- Developing interactions with stake holders, managers and policy makers in addressing environmental issues.
Job opportunities
Completion of the course will allow students to enter as Environmental Professional with excellent career options in industries, commerce, and public and private sector services. This course prepares graduates to join organizations as Environmental Advisor and Manager, Environmental Auditor, Environmental Officer, Scientist, Consultant, Academician and Researcher. The Program also enables graduates to continue in higher education to follow post-graduate studies in environment and other relevant disciplines like Health & Safety and Environmental Management, Environmental Law, Environmental Policy & Management etc.
Program Structure
BS Environmental Science will lead to develop an understanding of environmental system, processes, problems and possible solutions. This program will be of 4 years duration consisting of 8 semesters. Students have to complete minimum 136 credit hours of which 130 credit hours are for course work and 6 credit hours are for project as per HEC requirement.
The program is designed to provide a strong base for students by offering courses from other disciplines e.g. mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, economics, Earth Sciences, Law, and Economics etc. Students will also be equipped with computing, research and presentation skills during their course work.
Environmental Science at IET
Having realization of the fact that environmental discipline being a prerequisite for shaping a sustainable world, NFC-IET is going to start BS 4 year Environmental Science Program (BSES from this year. IET having highly qualified faculty of Chemical Engineering and Basic Sciences Department with a blend of industrial and teaching experience would prove to be a very much supporting faculty to conduct environmental courses. Environmental professionals trained by the IET will help address environmental issues of the country and the world as well.
