Major training equipment for operators, besides miniature plant and simulator, include

The miniature plant is a replica of any large process plant where plant operators get practical training. This unit includes

  • ammonia absorption/distillation columns
  • heat exchangers

  • valves
  • instrumentation

There is complete instrument panel for operation of this unit. Process Simulator is programmed for trouble shooting exercises on

  • boilers turbines
  • compressors
  • process plants.

Instrumentation laboratory

This lab houses operating model of

  • Process plant
  • Digital electronic learning kits
  • Electro-mechanical kits of learning
  • Oscilloscope 60 MHz
  • Electronic/pneumatic calibration benches
  • Flow/level/pressure measurement/temp/pH instruments & operating models
  • 20 point trend recorders etc.

Electrical laboratory

This lab has

  • Protective relay testing equipment
  • Current and potential transformers
  • Regulators
  • Over current and ground fault motors
  • Cut model of equipment and electrical measuring instruments.

Mechanical laboratory

This lab has

  • Non-destructive testing machine
  • Machine diagnosis equipment
  • Compressor and turbine for practice
  • Cut models of compressors
  • Pumps
  • Steam traps and valves etc

For hands-on training of mechanical trainees we have a workshop equipped with turning, shaping, drilling, bench fitting, welding and fabrication facilities.

Additional Facilities

  • Classroom training is conducted to ensure that the trainees know the basic principles of technology.
  • Lectures and discussions are carried out with the help of audio-visual aids. OHPs are mostly utilised in each classroom with transparencies produced by lesson planners.
  • About 80 video tapes imported from world renowned producers are available and are used during classroom session.
  • Each group of trainees is supposed to work and learn about his discipline in respective laboratories, the workshops and miniature plant.
  • Tests are given to trainees from time to time to evaluate the results of class room training.
  • Detailed and in depth practice sessions are carried out on modern and sophisticated instruments and machinery. Practice planning including task analysis, which details every important point for use of equipment, is carried out by the trainers, prior to the practice session. More emphasis is put on practical training rather than theory. Consequently, the ratio between theoretical and practical training is 1:2 respectively.

MINIATURE PLANT

After clearing the earlier stages of theoretical and practical training in classrooms and laboratories, the trainees work on the miniature plant, incorporating most of the unit operations actually carried out in fertilizer and other process industries. The plant consists of a water softening-boiler, cooling tower, centrifugal pumps, high pressure plunger pump, absorber, stripper, heat exchangers, coolers, antipollution section and a wide variety of pneumatic and electronic control instruments. The miniature plant is operated from the control room.

LIBRARY AND AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS

The air-conditioned Institute library is fully equipped with all types of books/magazines and current journals. In addition to this video section of library consists of a variety of movie film cassettes on technical topics.

The following audio-visual aids are frequently used in conducting theory classes:

- Overhead Projectors.

- Slide Projectors.

- Opaque Projectors.

- Video Camera System.
